eight brothers.

My father and his seven brothers all served in the United States Marine Corps. I grew up listening to them telling stories about their lives and they all included memories of the USMC – some pleasant, others less so. Luckily, all the brothers survived in war and peace time.

The rich, black charcoal combined with sepia symbolizes the threat of war, which was often very close. The dichotomy between personal and impersonal pervades, as each story is told on the chest of the Jar Head along with my own name for them, juxtaposed with their USMC serial number.
